How to play White Elephant
- Everyone brings one wrapped gift within the agreed budget and puts it in the pile.
- Draw the order. Use the picker above, or print number slips and pull them from a hat.
- Player #1 opens a gift from the pile and shows it to everyone.
- Every next player chooses: open a new wrapped gift or steal any opened gift. If your gift is stolen, you open a new one or steal a different gift.
- Steal limit: a gift can usually be stolen 3 times; after that it is frozen.
- Final swap: when every gift is open, player #1 may swap with anyone. Then the game is over.
Popular house rules
- No immediate steal-backs — you can't take back the gift that was just stolen from you on the same turn.
- Two-steal limit for big groups (20+) so the game doesn't drag on.
- Dice White Elephant — roll a die: 1–2 open, 3–4 steal, 5 swap two gifts, 6 pass.
- Yankee Swap / Dirty Santa — same game, different name in New England and the South.

How long does it take?

What are the basic White Elephant rules?
Everyone brings one wrapped gift and draws a number. Player 1 opens a gift. Each next player either opens a new wrapped gift or steals an opened gift from someone. A player whose gift is stolen opens a new gift or steals a different one. The game ends when every gift is open.
How many times can a gift be stolen?
Most groups use a limit of 3 steals per gift. After the third steal the gift is "frozen" and stays with that person. You can choose 2, 3 or no limit in the tracker.
What does player #1 get at the end?
Because player 1 had no gifts to choose from, they usually get a final turn: they may swap their gift with any opened gift before the game ends.
How much should a White Elephant gift cost?
Pick a budget everyone agrees on. $20 to $25 is the most common for offices and families; some groups play a $10 or "under $15" round.
Is White Elephant the same as Yankee Swap?
Yes. White Elephant, Yankee Swap, Dirty Santa and Chinese Gift Exchange are different names for the same stealing gift game. Secret Santa is different: each person buys for one assigned person.
